Here Comes the Holiday Storm… Stay Steady, Stay You
We’ve officially entered that stretch of the year…. the one where every day seems to have a theme, an event, or a dessert attached to it.
Holiday lights, office parties, cookie exchanges, Ugly Sweater gatherings, gift swaps, more cookies, winter blues, and then suddenly it’s New Year’s Eve and someone is asking about your resolutions.
It’s festive. It’s cozy. It’s nostalgic.
And it can feel like your entire routine has been tossed into a tinsel-covered blender.
If you’re working on weight management…
I like using “weight management” because truthfully… maintenance and bulking can even be challenging during this time of year.
…whether you’re maintaining, losing, or just trying not to slide into “holiday mode” where all structure evaporates… this season can feel like a gauntlet. Not because you’re doing anything wrong, but because the environment ramps up everything that makes health goals harder: richer foods, colder weather, disrupted schedules, emotional triggers, social pressure, constant grazing, and 14 different types of cookies within arm’s reach at all times.
So let’s talk about what to actually expect and how you can navigate it with a sense of control, calm, and maybe even joy.
The Season of So Many Events (and So Much Food)
Holiday eating isn’t limited to Christmas dinner or Hanukkah latkes.
It’s the leading-up events that get us every year:
- Cookie exchanges where you bring two dozen and leave with six dozen.
- Office parties where the drinks keep coming and the appetizers don’t stop.
- Gift exchanges that somehow always involve chocolate.
- School concerts, church gatherings, family get-togethers, and potlucks.
- And let’s not forget the steady stream of peppermint-flavored everything.
It’s a whole season of “just one bite,” “but it’s tradition,” and “I baked it myself!”
I see you…. I also like to bake, and yes, baking is still my favorite.
This is the time of year where the environment does most of the eating for us which means the solution isn’t cutting yourself off from the fun, but creating some anchors so you don’t float away on a sea of sugar and nostalgia.
Why This Season Feels Harder
You already know the obvious reasons: more food, more gatherings, more treats.
But here are the deeper factors….the ones I write about often, because they’re real:
1. Routines get scrambled.
Bedtimes shift. Meal timing gets weird. Travel disrupts everything.
And when routines fall apart, so does awareness.
2. Winter blues kick in.
Shorter days = lower mood, lower energy, and lower motivation.
It’s literally harder to move your body when it’s cold, dark, or both.
3. Emotional eating hits a peak.
Holidays stir up old memories… happy ones, painful ones, complicated ones.
Food becomes comfort, celebration, distraction, and escape.
4. Social pressure is real.
It’s amazing how many people suddenly become emotionally invested in whether you’re eating their signature dessert.
All of this is normal.
All of it is human.
And none of it means you’re failing.
What Helps: Staying Grounded Without Being Rigid
You don’t need perfection… you need awareness.
Not restriction… intention.
Here are the strategies that actually work during the holiday chaos…
1. Pick Your “Worth It” Traditions
Not everything deserves space on your plate.
Choose the foods you truly love… the ones tied to memories or culture or joy… and skip the things you’re only eating because they’re there.
Intentional indulgence > accidental overeating.
This can be a great way of practicing “worth it” through a fun mindful eating moment: Mindful Eating: Worthy of a Food Critic?
2. Don’t Arrive to Events Starving
You know this one, but it’s worth repeating: When you show up ravenous, everything looks like the best idea you’ve ever had. A small snack beforehand keeps you grounded at the buffet table.

3. Build a “Holiday Plate”
At bigger gatherings, try Plate Method: Portioning Made Easy
- Half veggies (yes, even at holidays),
- A quarter lean protein,
- A quarter starch or treat.
It’s flexible, not restrictive…. and it gives you structure without taking away joy.
4. Keep One or Two Daily Anchors
- A morning routine
- A walk
- A protein-forward breakfast
- A hydration habit
- A consistent bedtime
You don’t need all your habits… you just need a couple that keep you steady.

5. Move Gently and Often
SOMETIMES… this is not the season for heroic workouts. It might be the season for realistic movement like… And that’s simply because sometimes we just don’t have the time for those big massive workout plans and something done is better than something not… think about these ways through.
- A 10-minute walk after dinner
- Stairs instead of elevators
- Dancing at parties
- Quick indoor strength sessions
- Winter activities (skating, snowshoeing, etc.)
Movement beats motivation. Every single time.
6. Don’t Catastrophize One Indulgent Day
One big meal doesn’t define your progress.
One week doesn’t, either.
This is a whole season… consistency matters more than any single event.
All-Or-Nothing Mentality with Eating
Expectations That Make Life Easier
Here is the truth no one likes to say out loud…
- You might eat a bit more.
- Your weight might fluctuate.
- Your routine will not be perfect.
- You will have emotional days.
- You might feel less motivated.
None of this means you’re off track.
It means you’re alive during December.
The goal is not to avoid every cookie or skip every celebration.
The goal is to make choices you feel good about… choices that honor both your health and your humanity.

As We Head Toward the New Year…

The holidays are full of beauty and chaos, warmth and stress, joy and grief.
And you’re allowed to navigate them in a way that feels sustainable, kind, and balanced.
So as you move through Christmas lights, Hanukkah candles, winter gatherings, holiday treats, office parties, and the final champagne countdown of the year… remember:
You don’t need to lose yourself to enjoy this season.
You can stay grounded.
You can choose with intention.
You can honor your goals and your traditions at the same time.
And if you do get swept up in the chaos?
There’s always tomorrow to realign… with grace, not guilt.
I hope this helps!
